Teacher in Finland
Hi, I am Dr. Tomy Cherian, born and raised in Kerala, India. I moved to Finland in late 2014 to do my Master’s degree and then my PhD. While doing my PhD, I realised that studying molecules and their properties deeply wasn't really my thing and mustered enough courage to try the field that I thought I would really enjoy: teaching and education.
Having worked for the last few years as a full-time teacher in Finland, I realise increasingly the extremely privileged position I am in. Surrounded by super motivated professionals in arguably the best place on Earth to be a teacher, my sense of self as a teacher and my opinions on learning and education have changed rapidly. Being an “outsider” in the Finnish school system, I see not just its strengths but also its weaknesses.
Through the blogs posted here, I hope to document and share my developing thoughts on pedagogy, what science of learning can teach teachers, and the role of education in this modern world. And of course how it is like to teach and live in Finland.
